(Gray News) – President Donald Trump’s official merch site is selling items teasing a run for a third presidential term.

On Thursday, a “Trump 2028” hat ($50) and a “Trump 2028” T-shirt ($36) became available for purchase on the website.

The T-shirt also says, “Rewrite the rules,” seemingly a reference to running for a third presidential term, which is not allowed under the United States Constitution.

Trump has previously teased running for a third term, even going as far as telling NBC News on March 30 that he was “not joking” about it.

In that interview, Trump claimed there “are methods which you could do it,” but did not elaborate.

He did, however, say it is “far too early to think about it” and that he is focused on his current administration.

The precedent of serving only two terms was set by George Washington, who chose not to run for a third term as the first president of the United States.

However, it wasn’t officially a rule until the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution was established in 1947. This came after Franklin D. Roosevelt became the only president to be elected for a third and fourth term, which created concerns about a president serving unlimited terms.

Amending the Constitution to abolish the two-term limit would be very difficult, requiring either a two-thirds vote of Congress or two-thirds of the states agreeing to call a constitutional convention to propose changes. Even after the congressional vote or convention, three-quarters of the states would need to ratify the proposed amendment.
