Phoenix Mercury legend Diana Taurasi to have practice courts named after her
PHOENIX (AZFamily/AP) — With the WNBA All-Star game right around the corner, the Phoenix Mercury are paying homage to one of the best players in the game.
Mercury and Suns owner Mat Ishbia announced that two courts in the Mercury’s new state-of-the-art practice facility will be named after three-time WNBA Champion and 11-time All-Star Diana Taurasi.
On July 18, the team will unveil two Diana Taurasi Courts, along with the new 58,000-foot facility in downtown Phoenix. The courts will have a one-of-a-kind Taurasi-inspired logo.
The new practice facility will also include strength and cardio areas, hydrotherapy, a sauna, offices, meeting rooms, a lounge and dining room, among other amenities.
The celebration of the new practice facility, three blocks from the arena, will kick off WNBA All-Star weekend at Footprint Center.
It’ll bring together Mercury players, WNBA All-Stars, Olympians, and leaders in women’s sports to celebrate the GOAT and experience the world-class Phoenix Mercury practice facility.
Phoenix Suns owner Mat Ishbia said when he bought the franchise in 2023 that it was a priority for the Mercury to have their own practice facility.
Taurasi has been with the franchise her entire career since being selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA draft out of UConn.
Along with the championship rings and All-Star appearances, she’s a six-time Olympian who will play for the U.S. in the Paris Olympics later this month.
The WNBA All-Star skills challenge and 3-point contest are next Friday in Phoenix, with the U.S. Olympic 5-on-5 team facing Team WNBA in the All-Star Game the next day.
