The Mexicano reopens months after devastating kitchen fire
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — The Mexicano, a popular Phoenix restaurant, has reopened its doors after a destructive kitchen fire five months ago.
Founder Chef Joey Maggiore said the fire caused a lot of smoke and water damage from crews putting out the flames. Because of the damage, they had to completely redo all the furniture and walls.
“Something happened and the ashes were going on the roof and then it just ignited,” Chef Joey said. “It was over $3 million in damages.”
The restaurant unveiled a fresh open-concept look with lush greenery and a covered patio. The grand reopening was held on Jan. 31.
“We took the time to really look at the menu. We kept 90% of all the samples and stuff that people loved,” Chef Joey said.
New menu highlights include chorizo stuffed zucchini, fried quesadilla birria tacos and ribeye tacos.
There will also be new guest experiences, including a fresh tortilla-making station. Popular dishes include Birria Tacos, Birria Bao Buns, and churros.
Visit The Mexicano during happy hour for deals on margaritas, beer and sangria. You can also get tacos for $3.50 each and other specials, including taco salad and mini chimis, at discount rates.
“For us right now, we’re going to focus on The Mexicano [and] the Italiano and the new brand we’re working on, which will release next week,” Chef Joey said.
