MARICOPA, AZ (AZFamily) — An Arizona teacher needs your help to be voted “America’s Favorite Teacher.” Carlos Jimenez is now in the competition’s quarter-finals after being chosen among thousands of educators nationwide, and that’s Something Good.
Jimenez is an artist and teacher at Heritage Academy in Maricopa and was nominated for the competition. He has made it through several rounds, which included answering questions about his experience and favorite parts of teaching.
He says he loves seeing his students gain confidence in their abilities. “When they would see what they would create after taking my class for a couple weeks, that was the biggest satisfaction for me, seeing the look on their faces, like, “Wow, I can actually do this,” said Jimenez. “There was no topping that for me, and seeing that is just a really big satisfaction.”
The grand prize is $25,000, a feature in Reader’s Digest, a trip to Hawaii, and an assembly featuring Bill Nye.
“Not a dollar of that would be going to me. It would all be going back to my students,” said Jimenez. He adds that he will use the money to help his students with everyday necessities like classroom supplies, lunch, or a jacket during the winter.
