TEMPE, AZ (AZFamily) — Families, athletes and the Valley community gathered early Saturday for the 21st annual Pat’s Run to recognize a local and national hero.

Around 30,000 people were at the start line at the Arizona State University Tempe campus to participate in the run that honors Pat Tillman, an ASU graduate and Arizona Cardinals player who lost his life to friendly fire while deployed in Afghanistan.

The run raises money for the Pat Tillman Foundation, which helps provide scholarships to military service members and veterans.

ASU football coach Kenny Dillingham was this year’s race starter. Participants then began a 4.2-mile run through Tempe before crossing the finish line at the Mountain America Stadium and receiving their medals. The racers then enjoyed the new Tillman Tailgate, which was filled with music, food, drinks, and an expo.
