Glendale voters to decide on piece of land for VAI Resort
GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — Glendale voters are receiving a ballot for a special election set for May 20.
Two propositions on the ballot have to do with the VAI Resort, which is under construction near State Farm Stadium.
The $1 billion resort promises to be the largest in Arizona with four hotels, indoor and outdoor performance venues, a white-sand beach, 12 restaurants and retail shops.
The plot of land in contention is 10 acres on 95th Avenue and across the street from the resort. In November, the Glendale City Council unanimously approved the rezoning of the area so VAI could build their corporate offices and parking spots. VAI Resort’s President and CEO Grant Fisher said if they lose the vote, the end-of-year 2025 phased opening date could get pushed back.
“We are confident that we will win May 20th,” Fisher said. “If we were to lose, it would put a big stall on this. It would stall the jobs, the economic impact, and it would bring some pause to other developers who want to invest in this state.”
Fisher also said the resort will bring $2 billion in economic impact to Glendale and add over 2,000 jobs.
Labor group Worker Power said the land was zoned for a “green space” or a park and want voters to decide if the city council’s decision should be sent back. To be clear, there was never a park in the area, and none was planned for it, either.
“Glendale is ranked last among top-100 cities regarding sustainability; a reason for that is a heat island effect that we certainly do not need with a parking lot and office building that we do not need to improve that situation,” said Worker Power Executive Director Brendan Walsh, referring to a WalletHub survey from last October.
Voting ends on May 20.
