GLENDALE, AZ (AZFamily) — The housing crisis is top of mind for so many Arizona families, and one Valley nonprofit is taking note and looking to help.

Family Promise of Greater Phoenix is almost done building a temporary housing community out of shipping containers in Glendale. Ted Taylor, the chief executive officer, says the idea is to create more affordable housing for families experiencing homelessness.

“We believe it’s very important to keep parents with their children,” Taylor told Arizona’s Family on Thursday morning. “And infill, small-scale housing like this can do that.”

Families in the group’s shelters will be able stay in the shipping container homes before they transition to permanent housing. The community is being built behind the First Christian Church near 59th Avenue and Bethany Home Road.

Taylor says this area was chosen because it’s the zip code, 85301, with the highest eviction rate in the state of Arizona.

“We know that families need housing here, we’ve known it for years,” he said.

The units are 650 square feet and will be fully furnished. Taylor says they hope to have them open by the end of January.

The nonprofit runs shelter programs out of Scottsdale, Glendale and Mesa. Here is more information if you know someone who needs help.
