Eviction filings rise in Maricopa County as holidays approach
PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Some families in Maricopa County may spend the holidays at a homeless shelter this year with eviction filings on the rise.
This year continues to be one of the worst ever for evictions in the county.
In October, nearly 7,700 eviction cases were filed. That month ranks in the top 10 all-time in Maricopa County.
A county spokesperson said population growth does play a factor; however, the population has not grown 20% in five years, while evictions have.
Arizona’s Family spoke to Jake Beeson with Beehive Properties, which manages affordable housing units in the Valley. Beeson works with nonprofits to help people fight poverty and said the reason so many people are getting evicted is because of the cost of living and lack of low-income housing.
“We know that statistically about 7-8% properties Valley-wide are renting for $1,000 or less, and when you’re looking at folks on a fixed income, a lot of people who need to take advantage of low-income housing, $1,000 is a lot of money for rent,” Beeson said.
Beeson said you can help out by donating to the Community Housing Partnership, which will allow you to get a tax credit.
