PHOENIX (AZFamily)—The City of Phoenix is now paying homeowners to remove their grass through its Residential Grass Removal Program.

Qualifying homeowners can earn $2 per square foot of grass replaced. The goal is to conserve more water and assist homeowners with converting to desert landscapes.

According to the city’s water department, homeowners use the most water from watering lawns, but they could save about 50 gallons of water a year for each square foot of grass replaced.

To qualify for the program, you must:

  • Have at least 250 square feet of healthy, living grass
  • Apply at myPHX311
  • Take quality, wide photos of your entire lawn
  • Submit a project form of your current lawn and the desert landscape design you will install

The city will review your application and provide a Notice to Proceed if you qualify.

The program has no expiration date. However, the city is working with a $5 million budget, and funding will be provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
