PHOENIX (AZFamily) — Recent reports show rental prices shot up after the pandemic, jumping 32% between 2021 and 2023, making it difficult for many Arizona families to afford a roof over their heads in recent years.

Phoenix city leaders held an open house Wednesday to recruit more landlords for the Housing Choice Voucher program. The program reports an increase in interest over the years, but there is still a need in the community.

“We have over 2,300 landlords that are currently actively in the program and we have over 7,000 voucher holders housed throughout the City of Phoenix,” said Elenia Sotelo, deputy housing director for the city.

Eviction rates have increased in recent years, hitting the second-highest on record just last year in Maricopa County.

“The Housing Choice Voucher Program rental assistance is specifically for low income, disabled and elderly individuals and families. Landlords are not only providing rental units and homes to our most vulnerable and in need in the community, but also ensuring that they are a part of the solution,” Sotelo said.

Julien Macias manages a rental property with Maxx Properties. His property has more than 200 units, three of which are dedicated to the voucher program.

“We had a resident come in with a voucher and we inquired got approved and went through the motions,” Macias said. “It was about two years roughly that we participated and now that we have a few tenants on the program, we’re happy.”

This year, Maxx Properties, which owns and manages nearly 32 properties, is interested in expanding the program.

“You get to make an impact and make a difference in people’s lives in different situations people make be going through during these tough times,” Macias said.

Landlords looking to get involved in the program can learn more by visiting the city’s website.
